What is a SIS II alert and how can it be deleted?

The Schengen Information System (SIS) is designed to ensure safety and ease of movement within the Schengen area. It is capable of ensuring the exchange of information between participating countries about persons and objects of interest to law enforcement agencies. However, not everyone knows how SIS 2 works and what forms of data processing are provided. Let’s now look at what this system is and how legal support will help it when removing information from the Schengen System.

SIS II alert

What is SIS (Schengen Information System)?

SIS was created to support the Schengen countries. This system helps in ensuring security and control of external borders. It serves as a common information space where data about persons suspected of criminal activity is stored. As well as missing and stolen or lost items. The main task of SIS is to ensure rapid and effective cooperation between the police and judicial authorities of different countries.

The Schengen Information System provides security support within the Schengen Agreement. It provides up-to-date information and the ability to immediately respond to potential threats. With SIS capabilities, law enforcement agencies can verify documents and individual identification at the external and internal borders of participating countries. This significantly speeds up the process and increases the level of security.

What is SIS II?

SIS 2 refers to an improved version of the original system. It is designed to expand functionality and improve the efficiency of information exchange. Its difference lies in its higher data processing speed.  It also has improved information security and expanded capabilities for storing additional data.

The main improvements in SIS 2 are the ability to store biometric data. For example, fingerprints and photographs. This allows you to more accurately establish a person’s identity and reduces the risk of errors when checking documents.

In addition, SIS II provides greater access to information for various law enforcement and judicial authorities. The updated system promotes more effective cooperation between countries.

What does the SIS II system include?

SIS II stores various types of data that are essential for maintaining security and law enforcement. The system contains records of individuals who may pose a threat or interest to law enforcement. These could be:

  • Persons wanted for arrest or extradition;
  • Missing persons who may need protection or assistance;
  • Witnesses or persons to whom court documents must be served;
  • Persons who are prohibited from entering or staying in the Schengen countries.

In addition, SIS II stores information about items that have been stolen, lost, or may be associated with criminal activity. Such items include vehicles, documents, license plates, firearms and other property of interest to investigations.

The updated version of the system contains information with instructions for law enforcement agencies. It tells you what measures to take if a person or object is identified. To prevent abuse of its use, access to the system is strictly controlled. This allows us to strengthen the protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens.

Is it possible to delete data from the SIS II database?

Notifications may be removed from SIS 2. However, this presupposes the existence of clear and rigid rules and procedures. Data is stored in the system for the time required for use and must be current. Information is deleted if the restriction period has expired. Once the data is no longer needed, it is deleted from the system automatically.

Also, the authorities that entered the data decided to remove it from the system. If the data was entered in error, or if circumstances have changed. In such cases, the authorities that submitted the relevant notice may proceed to remove it on their own initiative.

In addition, the subject himself, whose data is stored in the system, can request that it be removed from the system. A citizen has the right to request removal of his data from the system. If you believe that the information entered illegally is not true.

The process of removing information from SIS II begins with the submission of a formal request to the competent authorities containing a description of the basis for the request and the necessary evidence. The authorities then evaluate the request and make an informed decision in accordance with the legislation of each state separately and international standards.
