Melisa Kurter is a specialist in international criminal law whose academic path led from a Bachelor of Laws at Marmara University (Turkey) to a Master of Laws in Transnational Crime and Justice. The LL.M. was a joint programme of the UN’s crime and justice research institute UNICRI in Italy and the University for Peace, a UN-mandated institution in Costa Rica.
She gained first-hand insight into international criminal proceedings as an intern at the Prosecutor’s Office of the IRMCT in The Hague — the mechanism that took over from the ICTY — assisting with war crimes investigations and reviewing litigation. Later, as a research intern at the UNSDG, she prepared policy analysis focused on vulnerable groups, which added an international governance and human rights dimension to her experience.
Melisa began her legal career with leading law firms in Istanbul, where she handled criminal litigation and cases involving maritime and environmental crime.
